attention has

Hon. Colonial Secretary,

Since I have been in the colony

been drawn to the provisions of the local Widows' and Orphans'

Pensions Ordinance 1908. I am anxious that it may be made clear

its that I do not fall under the provisions in any way as it would be

a serious financial burden for me if I did. I may point out that nothing at all was said to me either in Cyprus or in London on my appointment as to the existence of any such fund or as to the possibility of any deduction of any kind having to be made from my salary. My appointment was offered to me by a telegram dated the

19992-3rd. May from the Secretary of State to the High Commissioner of

Cyprus in the following terms offer appointment Attorney-General- Ship Hongkong Bucknill salary per annum £1,500 subject to no private

practice no free quarters if he accepts should leave soon as possible will be liable for his own passage telegraph reply Harcourt*: although I have had other communications with the Colonial Office in writing and verbally in connection with my appointment nothing was ever said about this Widows and Orphans Pensions Fund and I never heard of its existence until some time after my arrival in the Colony. I should like further to point out to you that I am a married man with a wife and 3 children, that I am very heavily insured and pay annually £146.2s premium on my life policies which are now worth over £5,000. You will therefore see that to have to pay another £60 per annum would be

a very serious tax.

7th. November, 1912.

(Sd.) John A. Bucknill,

Attomey-General.
